How To Instantly Improve Your Writing

By: Tony Hetherington

I'm often asked for tips of how people can write better or produce better results and find myself giving the same answers. Answers that have that have an immediate impact. Don't we all wish all advice was that effective! Here are those 5 ways that you can instantly adopt that will improve your writing today.

1. Plan what you're going to say

It's incredible to me how any people think that they can just sit at a screen (or paper) and write without giving it a moments thought. Those ironically are often the same people that ask for help. So my first tip is simple. Spend a few moments planning what you're going to say. Write down the main headings and then add a few lines of detail to each one. The result will be dramatic as your writing will be transformed!

2. Logical structure

The planning in the previous tip leads nicely onto this one. All writing needs to have a clear and logical structure. This is so the reader can fully understand what the writer meant to say without having to know the context it was written in or the reasons behind it. This is especially important in any writing in which you hope to influence or persuade the reader as their interest will be immediately lost if they become confused.

3. Cut out those common mistakes

There are certain mistakes that are so common that they will actually irritate a reader if they see them. For example, mistakes such as confusing there and their, your and you're and it's and its. Make sure your copy is free of such mistakes if you want to get your message across. There is a free ebook available called "Hear, they're and every wear" that shows you how to simply cut out those common mistakes. It's available from www.thewritingformula.com/mistakes.html.

4. Read it through

The act of reading through your own writing aloud will have a huge difference to your writing as it will both highlight mistakes that you may have previously missed and reveal any sentences that don't read well. It's important to read it through aloud as if you just try and read it your brain will skim over mistakes filling in what it thinks is there rather than what is actually written.

5. Get help

If you need help with your writing then get the help you need. Use editing services, such as my own, to add polish to your writing while keeping your knowledge and experience.
